In an age of aged Abercrombie tees and destroyed Hollister jeans this may seem counter-intuitive, but it is a must. Most of us do not realise as we enter college that there do exist events where one must dress up, besides Sunday morning brunch. There are formals, interviews, dates, dances, and ceremonies where a nice set of clothes is a must.
This does not mean you need purple label or Brooks Brothers best. Do not break the bank, but be able to look the part. For guys, you need a respectable sport coat/blazer, a nice pair of pants, a button down shirt, a tie, and a pair of dress shoes. And yes, they should match AND be clean.
As far as ladies, I am far from an expert in this realm, and I would say that most of you are much more in tune with this concept than your counterparts, so all I would say is: a nice dress and shoes that project beauty, not sleaze. Sexy, but understated is perfect for all events.
