Life as of late has taken a huge bite out of the time that I have to sit down and write. But I do hope that I will be able to continue posting from time to time. So please be patient with me, I have not left!
On that note, if there is anything someone would like to contribute as a post, please let me know….I’d be more than happy to have you!
I do have one interesting link in the meantime….How to Make a Duct Tape Book Cover from one of my all time favorite blogs, Lifehacker.
Enjoy, and hopefully see you soon!
Homecoming Beware
I returned to my alma mater about a month ago for homecoming, something I have done since I have graduated from college. I do this partly to relive some college experiences from days long gone, but also because as an alumnus I am involved with a non-for-profit corporation which is affiliated (loosely) with my school and my fraternity. It just so happens that the corporation always meets homecoming weekend at the school (as out of
the way as it may be for everyone involved, myself excepted). In any case, time to get off the tangent…..
I wrapped up my undergraduate studies in the spring of 2001. So I have effectively been out of (that) school for 5 years. However, I am still “young” (under 30), and known by many of the current students who are a part of my fraternity (partly because I did my grad work only 20 minutes away).
I was back at the chapter house for the annual homecoming dinner. Dates, cocktails, the whole hub-bub. I was there with my brother, who himself is a younger “alum” (he attended, pledged, and subsequently flunked out). We were having a fine time, talking to current brothers, brothers of our eras, as well as our forefathers. I also had the occasion to speak to some of the brothers’ dates. Now this is where the shock came into play……
Within a couple moments of talking to one of the dates, she asked me when I graduated. I told her, 2001. Her response…..”Ohhhhh, you’re sketchy.” Now how does one being 5 years out of college, and back for homecoming fall under the guise of being sketchy? It would have been one thing if I had hidden my wedding ring when I spoke to her, tried to pick her up, ask her out, or “whoooop-whooooped” it up as many of the current brothers did that night. I was simply trying to be polite and speak to her as we found ourselves standing next to one another. And I come to find out that I am sketchy for doing so.
Thus I have come to a conclusion. It is safe to be back at your school for events under only a couple of conditions:
- you have graduated within the last 4 years and still have close friends
- you have graduated over 10 years ago and return with your family, or are obviously out of your element in a fraternity
- you are back so often that even the fuck-sluts of the house know you
- you are so filthy rich that no one cares
Sad, yes. But I do believe it is the case. Thus I have 5 more years to go….humph!
New category
I have now added a new category…..tips and tricks.
Are there any little tricks you may know to make college life easier?
One I have heard time and again is filtering cheap vodka with a Brita in order to get rid of some of the impurities. Those sort of things will go here. Please let me know if you have any to add! Enjoy.
For those of you who may have been wondering where the fine line between recreational rail-buster and full-out cokehead exists…though I must say, if you have to ask such a question I know where you fall….

- Keys don’t only open doors.
- You know people only by their nicknames (Billy bumps, Vinny quick-fix, Nicky nostrils, Matty mirrors).
- You have seen Scarface at least 4 times in the past week.
- You look forward to a runny nose.

- Sitting around with the guys, making a list about what it means to be a cokehead
